What is FRP Vessel exactly?

FRP vessels, often referred to as “FRP tank” or “FRP filter vessel”, are an important component in the pretreatment system of a water treatment system.
It is a non-metallic composite material storage tank, made of resin and glass fiber through an automated PLC-controlled fiber winding process.
It can be filled with filter media such as quartz sand, manganese sand, activated carbon, and ion exchange resin to remove sediments, suspended solids, calcium and magnesium ions, and odors from raw water. Compared to traditional steel filter tanks, FRP tanks offer several advantages, including high strength, lightweight construction, good corrosion resistance, and the ability to withstand large temperature differences.
Currently, they have largely replaced traditional steel filter tanks and are widely used in many fields such as the chemical industry, water and wastewater treatment, food and beverage, mining and metals, power, energy, and high-purity applications.

Opening
- PPO material, thread connection (2.5" and 4")
- Aviation aluminum, flange connection (6")
Base
- Standard base: reinforced plastic (tank size: 6"–16");
- Round base: reinforced plastic (tank size: 18"–21");
- Tripod base: FRP (tank size: 24"–80")
Material Selection

Liner
The inner lining of large-diameter containers is made of glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP), while the inner lining of small-diameter containers is made of a thermoplastic material, manufactured through a blow molding process. It has excellent chemical resistance and is manufactured using an integrated rotational molding and blow molding process. The finished product features seamless connections, high-pressure resistance, and leak-proof properties.

FRP tank body
The tank housing is constructed using continuous filament winding of fiberglass-reinforced material and then sealed with epoxy resin. This process makes the container corrosion-resistant and completely leak-proof. We utilize computer-aided winding machines and other customized equipment to manufacture products that are high-performing and durable.

Accessories and Installation Location
FRP pressure tanks generally cannot be used alone. In the entire water treatment system, they need to be combined with core components such as water distributors, automatic valves, and central pipes to form the entire filtration system.
The price of a complete set is usually lower than the price of buying all the accessories individually. Therefore, we generally recommend that customers choose to buy the complete set.

The following is a diagram showing the installation locations of various components in an FRP pressure tank. Taking a 4-inch opening tank as an example, it requires both upper and lower water distributors. The specific component list will vary depending on the tank model.

Production Process of FRP Vessel
Step1: Inner Liner Production
The production begins with a seamless polyethylene (PE) inner liner, formed through rotational molding.
This one-piece liner creates a smooth internal surface, ensuring excellent corrosion resistance and completely eliminating leakage risks caused by welding or joints.

Step2: Filament Winding & Structural Reinforcement
After liner forming, the tank enters the automated filament winding stage.
Using PLC-controlled computer-assisted winding machines, continuous fiberglass rovings are precisely wound onto a rotating mold.
This process allows:
- High fiber content ratio
- Accurate fiber orientation control
- Uniform wall thickness distribution
The filament winding structure provides high tensile strength and an excellent strength-to-weight ratio, making the tank suitable for pressure vessels and cylindrical chemical storage applications.
Step3: Thermal Curing
The wound tank is then transferred to a controlled temperature curing environment.
During this stage:
- Epoxy or polyester resin fully cross-links
- Fiberglass layers are permanently bonded
- Structural stability and pressure resistance are achieved
The optimized curing process enables the FRP tank to withstand working pressures up to 10.5 kg/cm² without structural damage or deformation.

Step4: Opening Machining & Assembly
Once cured, precision machining is performed to create top and/or side openings according to design requirements.
Threaded inserts or flange connections are installed, followed by:
- Valve interfaces
- Distributors (if required)
- Base assembly
All components are fitted to ensure airtight sealing and mechanical reliability.
Step5: Hydrostatic Pressure Testing
Every FRP tank undergoes a hydrostatic pressure test before delivery.
The test verifies:
- Pressure resistance
- Structural integrity
- Leak-free performance
Only tanks that pass the pressure test are approved for final packaging.

Step6: Packaging
After testing, each tank is cleaned, inspected, and packed using export-grade protective materials.
Standard packaging includes:
- Protective film and foam
- Carton or palletized packaging
- Reinforced strapping for safe transportation
This ensures the FRP tank arrives in perfect condition, ready for installation.
FRP Vessel core process: Filament winding process

Filament winding is an open molding process automatically controlled by a PLC, utilizing a rotating mold made of FRP (fiber-reinforced polymer). This process simultaneously creates a smooth inner surface and a uniform, dense outer layer, ensuring consistency in both the strength and appearance of the finished product.
Through automated control, the filament winding process precisely controls the fiber laying angle and distribution, resulting in high-strength, lightweight, and stable composite material structures. Compared to traditional molding methods, it has a higher fiber content, significantly improving the product's mechanical properties.
This process is particularly suitable for manufacturing hollow cylindrical products such as pressure vessels, chemical storage tanks, and water treatment equipment tanks. The finished products possess extremely high tensile strength and pressure resistance, capable of stably withstanding an internal pressure of 10.5 kg/cm² without structural damage.
Furthermore, filament-wound pressure vessels exhibit excellent hydraulic performance and complete corrosion resistance, making them ideal for long-term use in water treatment, chemical, and corrosive media environments.
FRP Tank quality inspection process
1.2 times water pressure test
- Testing standard: Each FRP storage tank must undergo a hydrostatic pressure test before leaving the factory.
- Testing requirements: Test pressure of 1.2 times or more; pressure rise rate of 0.4 MPa/s.
- Required test results: No leakage/seepage from the FRP storage tank.

- Large diameter FRP tanks are packaged with bubble wrap.
Note: FRP tanks should be stored in their original packaging before installation. Do not unpack them before installation.

Transportation and installation
Loading and unloading method
- For 21" FRP Tanks Loading: FRP tanks with a diameter of 21" and below shall be handled manually. Please handle with care to prevent falling and collisions.
- For 24" FRP Tanks Loading: Fiberglass storage tanks with a diameter of 24 inches or more should be handled using a forklift or crane. If the fiberglass storage tank has a flange on the top port, it can be lifted using a crane. If the fiberglass storage tank does not have a flange on the top port, it should be handled using a forklift.
- For 40" FRP Tanks Installation: For large FRP storage tanks with a diameter of 40 inches or more, the lifting procedure is the same as the standard lifting procedure for FRP storage tanks with a diameter of 24 inches or more. Before lifting, all external packaging materials should be removed to ensure safe and smooth lifting operations. After the tank is in place and filled with material, it must be securely fixed to the ground. It is recommended to use pressure plates and expansion bolts to securely fasten the FRP storage tank to the foundation, preventing displacement or tipping during operation.
Precautions
- Wear rubber gloves when handling or installing FRP tanks.
- Do not roll or slide FRP tanks.
- Do not drop or strike FRP tanks. Do not allow FRP tanks to collide with walls or other equipment.
- Use a forklift or crane to lift FRP tanks; standard lifting procedures must be followed.
- Do not use hooks to lift FRP tanks from the inside. You can lift FRP tanks from the external flange to avoid damaging the inner lining.
- Do not use steel wires or chains to secure FRP tanks. You can use canvas bags or nylon bags to prevent FRP tanks from slipping.
