Reverse osmosis (RO) is a process that employs semi-permeable spiral wound membranes to separate and eliminate dissolved solids, organics, pyrogens, submicron colloidal matter, color, nitrate, and bacteria from water. In this process, the feed water is pressurized and propelled through the semi-permeable membrane, allowing water to permeate through its minute pores and resulting in purified water, known as permeate water. Meanwhile, impurities in the water are concentrated in the reject stream and flushed out as concentrated water. The application of RO membranes is primarily observed in various small-scale systems, including domestic water, hospital and laboratory cleaning, and other water purification equipment. It achieves comparable high flux levels as traditional low pass and salt removal procedures.
