What are the materials used to make UF membranes?
PAN (polyacrylonitrile), PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) are all materials commonly used to make ultrafiltration (UF) membranes. They have different chemical properties and characteristics, so there are some differences in the application of ultrafiltration membranes.
1. PAN (polyacrylonitrile)
PAN is a synthetic polymer with good chemical stability and mechanical strength. PAN ultrafiltration membrane has high porosity and large pore size, suitable for treating high turbidity water and liquids with more suspended matter. It is widely used in water treatment, industrial processing, and biotechnology.
2. PVC (polyvinyl chloride)
PVC is a common plastic material with good corrosion resistance and low cost. PVC ultrafiltration membrane is usually used for low-cost and small and medium-sized applications, such as household drinking water purification, water treatment equipment, etc. However, compared with PAN and PVDF, PVC has poor chemical corrosion resistance, so it may not be suitable for some special applications.
3. PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride)
PVDF is a high-performance polymer with high chemical stability, mechanical strength, and temperature resistance. PVDF ultrafiltration membrane has a small pore size and good chemical corrosion resistance, suitable for treating clearer liquids and applications requiring higher filtration efficiency. It is widely used in drinking water purification, biomedicine, food and beverage processing, and other fields.

UF Membrane Maintenance
Acid washing
Use citric acid to adjust the pH value of the reverse osmosis water (or ultrafiltration water) in the liquid medicine tank to pH = 2, start the liquid medicine pump, adjust the regulating valve so that the pressure gauge shows pressure P = 0.2 MPa, and use ultrafiltration water to rinse the ultrafiltration membrane after 30 minutes of circulating acid washing.
Alkaline washing
Use sodium hydroxide and sodium hypochlorite to adjust the pH value of the RO reverse osmosis water (or ultrafiltration water) in the liquid medicine tank to pH = 12, adjust the regulating valve so that the pressure gauge shows pressure P = 0.2 MPa, and use ultrafiltration water to rinse the ultrafiltration membrane after 30 minutes of circulating alkaline washing.
Note:
- The acid washing liquid and alkaline washing liquid used for ultrafiltration membrane are the same as those prepared when cleaning RO membrane and can be used universally.
- Alkaline washing should be performed again after acid washing, and acid washing should be performed again after alkaline washing until the outlet water pH = 7, otherwise it will affect the water flux.
